Message from the representative

NBRP〝NIhonzaru (Japanese macaques )" is one of the NBRP Core Facility Upgrading Programs, supported by Japan Agency for Medical Research and Developement (AMED), which is to establish sustainable supply of purpose-bred Japanese macaque monkeys as valuable model for biomedical research, with the object of contributing human health and wellbeing.

Japanese macaque monkeys, which are indigenous to Japan, have high cognitional abilities and great aptitude for learning complex behavioral tasks. They often play an important role as an essential biomedical research model in Japan, especially to elucidate human higher brain function, such as memory, learning, attention, emotion, consciousness, and so on, or to clarify the mechanisms of sensory and motor nerve for controlling delicate body movement. The findings of these studies are expected to develop new treatment methods for various neurological dysfunctions and cerebrospinal injuries, which will significantly improve the quality of the patients’ life.

Our project has also been working with universities and research institutions in Japan to promote 3Rs, animal welfare and biosafety for Japanese macaque monkeys in laboratory, and to bring about better public understandings of the importance of primates as research models.

At the commencement of the fourth term of NBRP, we hope to continue making further contribution to the advancement of life science, and receive full recognition and support from worldwide scientific community.
